Love, boundaries, and a very firm warning – Toyin Abraham just got candid about the one habit her husband refused to tolerate in their marriage.
In a refreshingly honest chat that has got everyone talking, Nollywood powerhouse Toyin Abraham has opened up about how she kicked her cigarette habit – and it was all down to her husband.
Appearing on a recent episode of The Moraya Show, the actress revealed she used to be a full-blown cigarette addict. But her husband, fellow actor Kolawole Ajeyemi, drew a hard line when their family started to grow.
As first reported by cbinews.tv, Toyin didn’t sugar-coat it.
“My husband, Kolawole Ajeyemi is one of the best things that ever happened to me. He lets me shine and be me. I used to be a cigarette addict, but he warned me that if I don’t stop smoking our marriage won’t work. I had to stop it because I valued my marriage. Well, I have stopped cigarettes, but I still do vape,” she said.
She was quick to clarify though – Ajeyemi isn’t controlling. Far from it. According to her, he lets her be herself and do what makes her happy, as long as it’s safe. The real turning point came after the birth of their son.
Giving more context to the story, Toyin explained that while they were dating, Kola told her she couldn’t smoke during pregnancy. Then after she gave birth and was spotted having a puff on a night out, he told her calmly: he would never stop her from smoking or drinking, but the day their son sees her with a cigarette would be the end of their marriage.
That was the wake-up call.
Some quick background for you
Toyin and Kolawole quietly tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed their son, Ireoluwa, later that same year. It’s Toyin’s second marriage and she has always been vocal about how much more peaceful and supportive this union feels.
This isn’t the first time a Nollywood star has spoken about smoking. For years, the industry glamorised it on screen, but off-screen, many female stars have faced serious backlash for admitting they smoke – a double standard that still exists in Nigeria.
And here’s the bigger picture: According to data from the Nigerian Tobacco Control Alliance, about 4.5 million Nigerians aged 15+ still smoke cigarettes, with male smokers vastly outnumbering female smokers. Globally, the WHO says tobacco still kills more than 8 million people a year. That’s why a lot of ex-smokers are switching to vapes, just like Toyin mentioned – though health experts still warn that vaping isn’t risk-free, it’s generally considered less harmful than combustible cigarettes.
Toyin’s story is a familiar one for many couples – love isn’t just about letting anything slide, it’s also about accountability, especially when kids come into the picture.
Love that for her. Marriage, motherhood, and choosing health – what a combo.
