The loan is for the Sokoto–Badagry super highway...
A request by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National Assembly for approval of a fresh $516 million external loan to fund parts of the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians.
Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory who spoke to CBI News expressed concern over the move, questioning the need for additional borrowing amid ongoing economic challenges.
Ahmed Saliu, a businessman, said he was surprised by the request and argued that further borrowing was unjustified, citing what he described as poor accountability in the use of previous loans.
Funsho Ibitoye, a civil servant, also questioned the rationale behind the project, expressing doubts about the necessity of securing new loans for its execution.
Media personality Martins Idakwo described the loan application as unfortunate, saying the current administration has yet to significantly ease the economic burden on citizens.
Others, however, acknowledged the importance of infrastructure development. Praise Ekpenyong, a civil servant, said while the project could be beneficial, the government should prioritise initiatives that directly improve citizens’ welfare.
Anthony Foster said the utilisation of the loan must be transparent and accountable to ensure public trust.
According to Tinubu, the proposed loan, expected to be sourced from Deutsche Bank, will fund Sections 1, 1A and 1B of the 1,000-kilometre Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, a project aimed at linking Nigeria’s North-West to the South-West corridor.
