President Bola Tinubu has finally escalated the matter - Nigeria is taking the recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa straight to the top of the African Union.

So here's what's happened.

President Bola Tinubu has formally raised the alarm over the recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, warning that the violence is tearing at the very fabric of continental solidarity.

The President didn't mince words. He said these attacks undermine unity, peaceful coexistence and everything the AU stands for.

And he's now pushing for real action. Tinubu is calling on African leaders to act collectively and urgently, and has urged the AU to put the matter squarely on the agenda for the 40th Ordinary Session of the Assembly in January 2027.

The position was delivered on his behalf by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Luanda, Angola on Sunday, 30th August 2026.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Office of the Vice President, Shettima conveyed Nigeria's demand for stronger efforts to protect the safety, dignity and rights of African nationals everywhere on the continent.

It's a bold move, and one many will be watching closely.
