President Bola Tinubu Signs Electoral Bill Into Law.
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law. CBI News notes that this follows the passage of the bill by the National Assembly on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after months of deliberations.
The Electoral Act 2026, officially the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026, had been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives after months of debate and revision.
The amended Electoral Act now replaces the 2022 version following the President's signature, which also reflects the new law’s effect.
Speaking at the State House after President Tinubu signed the bill into law, the leadership of the National Assembly expressed strong satisfaction with the newly signed Electoral Act, describing it as a historic and painstaking piece of legislation that reflects the genuine aspirations of Nigerians.
-Sen. Godswill Akpabio-Senate President
-Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives
President Tinubu’s assent marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s preparations for its next general elections, giving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a new legal framework under which to operate and issue fresh electoral guidelines.
