No solo TV broadcast this year, President Bola Tinubu is taking his Democracy Day address straight to the National Assembly, cbinewstv reports.
So here's what's happening. President Tinubu will speak to a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives on 12 June, and he'll deliver his presidential broadcast from there too.
The update came from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who announced it on Tuesday in Abuja. It was contained in a statement signed by his special adviser on media and publicity, Yomi Odunuga.
Akume made the disclosure while inaugurating the inter-ministerial committee for the commemoration at the Shehu Shagari Complex.
It's a full week of events, not just one speech:
4 June: World Press Conference
5 June: Special Juma'at Prayers
7 June: Special Inter-denominational Church Service
9 June: Democracy Day Public Lecture
10 June: Youth and Women-Orientated Programmes
12 June: Presidential address at the National Assembly, followed by a Democracy Day Gala Night .
Akume was clear that things will be kept modest this year. The administration, he said, is conscious of the national mood and its commitment to fiscal responsibility.
He also paid tribute to the heroes of the 12 June 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, saying Abiola's sacrifice remains the foundation on which Nigeria's current democratic institutions are built. The annual commemoration, he noted, is a fitting way to honour their memory while celebrating how far the country has come.
For the Tinubu government, the day is also a platform to show Nigerians the progress made in consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions, and repositioning the country through reforms, despite the prevailing socio-economic challenges.
Who is organising it? Akume chairs a heavyweight inter-ministerial committee with ministers for information, interior, FCT, health, foreign affairs, finance, defence, and budget and economic planning, plus the national security adviser, the inspector-general of police, the DSS director-general, and several presidential aides and permanent secretaries. Their brief is to plan, organise and execute all approved activities, co-opt relevant organisations, document everything for posterity, and handle any other tasks needed for a smooth celebration. He has already directed all subcommittee secretaries to submit their budgets promptly.
