King Charles III to host Tinubu in Nigeria’s first state visit to the UK in 37 years...
President Bola Tinubu will embark on a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom beginning March 18, Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday.
According to a statement from the royal communications team, the visit is being undertaken at the invitation of King Charles III.
President Tinubu will be accompanied by his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
CBI News reports that the visit is significant as it marks the first state visit to the United Kingdom by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.
Nigeria’s previous state visits to the UK were made by former heads of state Yakubu Gowon in 1973, Shehu Shagari in 1981, and Ibrahim Babangida in 1989.
King Charles, who was Prince of Wales at the time, has longstanding ties with Nigeria, having visited the country in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018.
While this will be President Tinubu’s first official state visit to the UK, it will not be his first engagement with the British monarch.
Both leaders assumed office in May 2023 and have met on multiple occasions since then.
In November 2023, Tinubu met King Charles ahead of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The President described that meeting as “a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties.”
The relationship was further reinforced in September 2024, when King Charles received Tinubu at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the discussions focused on global and regional issues of shared concern, with particular emphasis on the “urgent and complex challenge of climate change.”
The royal communications team added that more details regarding the programme of events for President Tinubu’s state visit will be announced in due course.
