No more delays on funding, Tinubu tells SGF as North Central unveils bold 20-year growth plan.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of all approved funds for regional development commissions. According to cbinews.tv, the directive came on Monday at the North Central Development Commission Summit in Abuja, themed The Great Leap Forward.
The President, who was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, said funding the commissions is central to his Renewed Hope Agenda to fast-track development nationwide.
He said government will continue to give the NCDC and other regional commissions political and financial backing to unlock Nigeria’s economic and industrial potential. He therefore directed the SGF to ensure all funds accruable to the commissions are released as and when due.
They are not meant to replace state or local governments. Their job is to coordinate big-ticket regional projects that states alone cannot handle, think rail links, airports, industrial parks, security corridors, health and education infrastructure.
Tinubu also warned boards and management to steer clear of corruption, marginalisation and politicisation. He said such actions will not be tolerated and sanctions will follow.
He added a reality check too. Commissions must not rely only on Abuja. He urged them to chase public-private partnerships, donor funding and development finance.
The North Central has long been called Nigeria’s food basket, but its wealth runs deeper. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, who chairs the North Central Governors Forum, said the region is home to Benue cement, rice production and sesame production.
He cited Kogi cement as proof that processing beats exporting raw materials. He revealed that Nasarawa had over 400 steel licences in 2019 with zero processing plants at the time, but now hosts Nigeria’s largest and second-largest lithium processing plants.
This is about moving from extraction to value addition. If the 20 year plan works, North Central could become one of Africa’s most competitive agricultural and mineral processing hubs, not just a supplier of raw goods. And Tinubu’s push ties directly to security. As he noted, development can only thrive in a stable environment, a key concern in the region.
NCDC Chief Executive Cyril Tsenyil said the commission will focus on regional economic corridors, agro and mineral processing and youth opportunities. For citizens, the next test is simple: will the funds actually drop, and will projects be visible?
