Forget aid — Nigeria wants data, tech and innovation. President Tinubu has just pitched a bold new deal to China that could transform Nigeria's oceans into a goldmine.

Nigeria is coming for its share of the blue economy, and President Bola Tinubu wants China right beside us.

As first reported by cbinews.tv, Nigeria's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has disclosed that President Tinubu has invited the People's Republic of China to partner with Nigeria through the deployment and exchange of geophysical data across our entire nautical domain.

And this isn't your usual aid-style handshake. According to the Mission, the President is pushing for something smarter — strategic partnership, proper technology transfer, and data-driven collaboration.

The details were shared in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Office of Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, after a keynote address delivered by Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim at the United Nations Sustainable Development Workshop on High-quality Development of the Marine Economy in Beijing.

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Ambassador Ibrahim said Nigeria's big vision is to use geophysical intelligence, marine research and innovation to fast-track sustainable growth and put Nigeria on the map as one of the world's leading blue economy nations.

His words were quite direct:

"President Bola Tinubu is offering China an open invitation for partnership through geophysical data and innovation rather than aid. The future prosperity of nations lies in harnessing the immense wealth of the oceans through knowledge, technology and strategic cooperation," Ibrahim said.

The envoy, who praised China for its global leadership in the blue economy, said the creation of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy by the Tinubu administration shows just how serious Nigeria is about maximising the wealth in our maritime resources.

He also used the global stage to call on the international community to lean into innovation, artificial intelligence, sustainable financing and stronger partnerships to unlock the massive potential of the marine economy.

And for developing countries? He advocated innovative financing mechanisms to help build resilient blue economy infrastructure and promote sustainable ocean governance.

His closing message was loud and clear: “The future is here; doing nothing is NOT an option.”

Ambassador Jimoh reaffirmed Nigeria's readiness to collaborate with China and other international partners to build a prosperous and sustainable global marine economy.

One thing is clear — Abuja is no longer looking to the sea just for fish.
