It's the end of an era at ECOWAS — and President Tinubu has just had a final sit-down with the man leaving the top job.
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday welcomed the outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray, to the State House in Abuja.
It was a warm but low-key affair. According to photographs released by the State House media office, Dr Touray arrived at the Presidential Villa alongside the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, for what was described as a closed-door meeting.
While the details of their discussion haven’t been made public, the timing says it all. The courtesy visit comes just weeks before the Gambian diplomat formally hands over the leadership of the executive arm of the regional bloc.
For those who don’t know, Touray is a proper career diplomat. He assumed office as President of the ECOWAS Commission on 3 July 2022, after being unanimously nominated by the Government of The Gambia and endorsed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for the 2022–2026 term. He took over from Ivorian diplomat Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who led the Commission from 2018.
Before ECOWAS, his CV is quite stacked — he served as The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Yahya Jammeh, a role he left in September 2009. He then had a stint with the Islamic Development Bank before returning to frontline diplomacy.
A big moment for regional politics, no doubt.
