At 85, Ibrahim Babangida remains one of Nigeria's most talked-about leaders, and President Bola Tinubu says his impact is simply undeniable.

Love him or loathe him, you cannot ignore his footprints. That was the message from President Bola Tinubu as he celebrated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday.

According to cbinews.tv, President Tinubu described IBB as a true elder statesman whose leadership left a lasting mark on the nation.

In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President reflected on Babangida's rise following the 1985 coup and his eight-year administration, which, he said, reshaped Nigeria politically, economically and even geographically.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

Tinubu also pointed to IBB's economic reforms, massive infrastructure drive, and the creation of key agencies and institutions that are still very much part of our national life today.

And then there is the map of Nigeria as we know it. The President commended Babangida's foresight and sense of fairness in the creation of states, noting that his wisdom helped shape the country's current political structure.

Even now, living a quiet life at his famous Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State, Babangida continues to be a reservoir of counsel for the nation, Tinubu said, adding that his advice remains a source of inspiration for younger generations.

Rounding off his tribute, the President prayed for continued grace and good health for the former leader.

“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” he said.
