New Hijri year, same big prayer for Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has sent warm wishes to Muslims at home and abroad, and he’s using the moment to call for a little more patience, sacrifice and love for country.
President Tinubu has felicitated the Muslim Ummah as Nigeria marks 1st Muharram 1448AH, which falls today, Tuesday 16 June 2026.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the Islamic New Year isn’t just about dates on a calendar. It’s a chance to reflect on the Hijrah, Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Madina, and what it still teaches us: sacrifice, renewal, patience, and total trust in Allah’s plan.
And he reckons those same lessons are exactly what Nigeria needs right now if we’re serious about building a peaceful, just and prosperous nation.
Tinubu’s message was pretty direct:
rededicate yourself to good citizenship
choose kindness over quarrel, tolerance over tension
be honest at work, devoted to duty, and play your part for unity and security
He also offered prayers for the country, asking Allah to bless every household with peace and prosperity in this new Islamic year, and to keep guiding Nigeria on the path of progress.
The date was confirmed yesterday by the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who declared today as 1st Muharram 1448AH.
So, happy New Hijri Year to everyone observing, may it bring renewal for you, and for Nigeria too.
