Decades of brotherhood on the line? Nigeria has told South Africa enough is enough over the persistent attacks on Nigerians living in the country.

As reported by cbinews.tv, things got quite tense behind closed doors today as Nigeria and South Africa held high-level talks over the worrying resurgence of xenophobic attacks.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, met with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, who came as a special envoy of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Enikanolaiye made it clear that President Bola Tinubu himself ordered the meeting. The brief was simple - address the recurring attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, openly and frankly.

He didn’t mince words either. The minister urged Pretoria to take urgent, concrete steps to end what Nigeria described as recurring Afrophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals. He warned that the violence is now threatening decades of strategic partnership between Africa’s two biggest economies.

And he brought history into it. Enikanolaiye reminded South Africa of Nigeria’s frontline role in its liberation from apartheid, plus how both nations worked side-by-side to transform the Organisation of African Unity into the African Union and drive the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

He also expressed deep concern over what he called a disturbing pattern, noting that these xenophobic outbreaks are nothing new, with cases recorded as far back as 1995, and then again in 1998, 2006, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2024 and now 2026.
