Big boost for Northern Nigeria's aviation hub! President Bola Tinubu has just approved a whopping N46 billion to give Kano Airport's second runway a complete facelift.

So, there was excitement at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on Tuesday as the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, commissioned the newly remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal.

And while he was at it, he dropped the big news.

According to the Minister, President Tinubu has approved N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the airport's second runway. He says the move is to help Kano compete favourably with other top international airports around the world.

Keyamo didn't mince words about why Kano was getting such attention.

“The Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has earmarked Kano Airport for major upgrades because of the importance of this airport,” he said. He also noted that the appointment of former Kano Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as FAAN Board Chairman was strategic, because of the President's vision for aviation in the state.

He added that this is all part of the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda to transform aviation infrastructure across the country.

And that's not all. The Minister also revealed that work has already started on the Hajj Terminal, with contractors currently on site.

For those wondering about the name, the newly upgraded domestic terminal was named after Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, a celebrated aviation pioneer from Kano, in honour of his contributions to the industry.

Describing the commissioning as a major milestone, Keyamo said, “The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport remains the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. That is why we have earmarked Kano for major upgrades.”

On her part, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, said the upgrade shows FAAN's commitment to delivering world-class facilities and a better experience for passengers.

FAAN Board Chairman, Dr Ganduje, also commended the President and the Minister for prioritising Kano, saying the projects will cement the state's place as the commercial and aviation hub of the North.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, and the Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
