Unfinished structure gives way during service as rescue efforts save 20.
Three people, two women and a man, have been confirmed dead after a three storey building being used as a church collapsed on worshippers in Accra on Sunday.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak said 20 others, most of them women and children, were rescued and are receiving treatment in hospitals. He added there was a 90 to 95 percent certainty that no one remained trapped.
Emergency teams worked through the night under floodlights searching the debris for victims.
The cause of the collapse, which followed heavy rainfall, remains unknown, with authorities saying investigations are ongoing.
The building, part of a school in Accra’s New Town area, had been left unfinished for several years but was still being used, according to residents.
Mohammed Mubarak described the incident as a very sad day and acknowledged the difficulty in determining how many people were inside at the time, while praising emergency responders for their swift overnight efforts.
Images shared by the national fire service showed rescue workers at the scene as crowds gathered nearby.
Witnesses said they heard trapped victims calling for help beneath the rubble and described the structure as weak and poorly maintained.
Rescue operations are continuing as debris is cleared to ensure no one remains trapped.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about building safety standards in Ghana and recalled past incidents linked to poor construction, including the 2012 collapse of a multi storey shopping centre.
