Nothing says patriotism quite like a flag so big it takes hundreds of hands to carry it, and Mumbai just did exactly that.
Thousands of people flooded the seafront on Monday, August 10 2026, for a massive 'Tiranga' rally, as reported by cbinews.tv, just days ahead of India's 80th Independence Day.
Footage shows an enormous Indian Tricolour being carried along the promenade, with crowds waving smaller flags and marching under banners reading 'Nation First Tiranga Fest'. The atmosphere was loud, proud and unashamedly patriotic.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis joined the march, along with scores of BJP workers and veterans.
"We are patriots, and that's why we are celebrating the Tiranga Yatra," said one member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Former serviceman Naneswar Modaq said the point was simple: unity and respect. "If a lot of people gather here to show respect to this Tiranga, then it is a matter of great joy for us," he added.
The rally was part of the BJP's 'Har Ghar Tiranga ', literally 'Tricolour in Every Home' campaign, which encourages Indians to hoist the national flag to mark Independence Day.
India marks Independence Day on 15 August, commemorating the end of nearly 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947. This year is extra special; it will be the 80th Independence Day, counting from 1947.
The Tiranga itself has a deep history. Designed by Pingali Venkayya and adopted on 22 July 1947, just weeks before Independence, its three colours stand for courage and sacrifice (saffron), peace and truth (white) and faith and chivalry (green), with the 24-spoke navy blue Ashoka Chakra at its centre.
The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign was first launched in 2022 under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative to mark 75 years of independence.
Since then, it has become a huge annual mobilisation. In 2023 alone, the government said over 60 million selfies with the flag were uploaded, and this year events are being held from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
For Mumbai, India’s financial capital and home to more than 21 million people, these seafront rallies have become a signature pre-Independence Day spectacle.
