It was an incredibly emotional afternoon in Ketu on Tuesday, hundreds of mourners, tears, chants, and tributes as Lagos NURTW bigwig Toba Ajiboye was finally laid to rest.
There were seriously emotional scenes in Ketu, Lagos, on Tuesday as family, colleagues, friends and loyal supporters gathered to bid farewell to Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
If you’ve been on social media, you’ve probably seen the videos already. People wailing, hugging, paying their last respects as the slain union leader was buried. It was heavy.
Toba Ajiboye sadly passed after he couldn’t survive gunshot wounds from that brutal attack on his vehicle in Fadeyi on Sunday evening. Gunmen opened fire on his car. He was rushed to hospital, and at first, everyone thought he would pull through, until the devastating news broke on Monday morning.
The Lagos State Police Command has since confirmed the incident. According to the PPRO, Abimbola Adebisi, a manhunt is underway for the killers.
“The incident happened on Sunday, and one person died. He is a member of the transport union in Lagos. Investigation has commenced, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the killers,” the police spokesperson said.
Sources close to the family told us he had actually gone to Fadeyi to see some of his childhood friends, that's the area he grow up, and was attacked while leaving.
One source said, “He had visited the area on Sunday as he regularly did because that was where he grew up. He was leaving that evening when some gunmen shot at his vehicle.”
It gets even more heartbreaking. Three other people who were inside the vehicle with him were also hit and are still in hospital fighting for their lives.
“There were about three other people in the vehicle. They also sustained gunshot wounds. Their condition is very serious as we speak,” a union member, Taofeek, shared.
Photos and videos from after the attack show his car completely riddled with bullet holes. Chilling stuff.
Paying tribute, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle, aka Sego, said he was shattered.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. He was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation,” Sego wrote on Facebook.
Online, reactions have been mixed. While many remember him as a loyal leader, philanthropist and community guy who always gave back, others say you can’t separate his story from the long-standing violence allegations that follow transport union politics in Lagos.
For now, no one really knows the motive behind the attack. Police say investigation is still ongoing.
May his soul rest in peace.
