President limits motorcades to reduce consumption after Middle East conflict.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered government officials to travel in a single bus on official trips to curb fuel use, responding to shortages linked to the Middle East war.
Fuel prices in the country have risen by about one third since March, the energy regulator reported last week.
At a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, Hassan said her official convoy will be reduced to essential vehicles only, including her escort, police, and a backup car. Her entourage previously included more than 30 vehicles, often causing major traffic disruptions.
“From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus to cut fuel consumption,” she said.
The fuel shortages follow disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for a fifth of the world’s oil and gas. Last week, Ethiopia announced it would prioritise fuel for essential goods and public transport vehicles.
