Big political shake-up in Sokoto as former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal steps aside from the 2027 Senate race, choosing party unity over personal ambition.
According to cbinews.tv, former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially withdrawn from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race and handed over the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket to former Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Malami-Yabo.
Tambuwal, who is widely seen as a key leader of the ADC in Sokoto State, reportedly stepped down after consultations within the party, aimed at resolving disagreements over candidate selection ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision is being described as a move to preserve unity and strengthen internal harmony within the party.
Speaking on the development in a phone interview, the Sokoto State ADC Publicity Secretary, Lamir Aminu, confirmed that Tambuwal gave up his ambition in the interest of peace and stability.
“Senator Tambuwal decided to relinquish the ticket to promote harmony and strengthen internal democracy in the party,” he said.
He further explained that the party is intentionally creating space for younger politicians, noting that several House of Representatives tickets in the state have also been allocated to younger aspirants.
“The ADC leadership in Sokoto is committed to giving younger politicians the opportunity to contest positions,” he added. “The move by our leader reflects our ideology of grooming young and vibrant leaders.”
Meanwhile, political activities within the ADC continue to intensify ahead of the February 20, 2027 general elections. In a related development, ADC chieftain Faruku Umar Fada has emerged as the party’s candidate for the Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency.
Fada’s emergence was announced earlier on Friday, with party supporters describing him as a grassroots mobilizer with strong influence across the constituency.
Speaking after receiving the ticket, Fada expressed gratitude to party leaders and pledged to focus his campaign on youth empowerment, education, and effective representation.
“My focus would be on effective representation, youth empowerment, education, and addressing challenges affecting constituents in Sokoto North and Sokoto South,” he said. “With the total support of every stakeholder in this party, we will get there.”
