Prosecutors accuse 62 year-old of aggravated pimping, rape and coercion.
A Swedish man accused of exploiting his “vulnerable” wife and forcing her to have sex with numerous men for payment went on trial on Friday facing charges of aggravated pimping, rape and assault.
The 62 year old suspect, who denies all allegations, was arrested in October after his wife reported him to police in northern Sweden. He has remained in custody since then.
The man, reportedly a former Hell’s Angels member with a tattoo around his eye, appeared in court wearing a grey chequered shirt and remained composed as prosecutor Ida Annerstedt presented the charges.
Prosecutors allege that over several years he earned money by pressuring his wife “to perform and submit to sexual acts”.
“He is charged with aggravated pimping. He has facilitated an operation in which his partner and later wife have sold sex,” Annerstedt said during a break in proceedings.
The wife was not physically present in court but followed the trial via video link, with only her lawyer visible to protect her identity.
After the charges were read, the hearing continued behind closed doors.
The accused is alleged to have created online adverts, arranged meetings, acted as a lookout and coerced the woman into sexual acts, including online performances intended to attract more clients.
Prosecutors also claim he contributed to the development of a drug addiction and describe the case as “ruthless exploitation”.
Annerstedt told the court the defendant had threatened to kill the woman if she left him, adding that she was warned not to anger him because “the monster would be released”.
The prosecution says the man made more than 500,000 Swedish kronor from the alleged exploitation.
His lawyer, Martina Michaelsdotter, said the defendant denies all charges.
Under Swedish law, selling sex is not illegal, but buying sex or facilitating the sale of sex is a criminal offence.
In addition to aggravated pimping and four counts of assault, the suspect faces eight rape charges and four attempted rape charges.
The rape allegations include incidents in which he allegedly forced his wife to have sex with a client and compelled her to perform sexual acts on herself for online videos.
Such acts are classified as rape under Swedish law due to lack of consent.
The case has shocked Sweden and drawn comparisons to the French case involving Gisele Pelicot, whose husband was convicted in 2024 of drugging her and enabling multiple men to assault her while she was unconscious.
