Supreme court to deliver verdict on ADC leadership crisis Thursday...
The Supreme Court of Nigeria has announced it will deliver judgment in the leadership dispute rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday, April 30.
CBI News reports that the apex court disclosed on Wednesday that the verdict would be delivered by 2 p.m.
A five-member panel led by Mohammed Garba had earlier reserved judgment after parties adopted their final written addresses.
The development comes amid concerns raised by the opposition party over timelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The faction of the ADC led by former Senate President, David Mark, is challenging the March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which ordered parties to maintain the status quo in the party’s leadership tussle.
In his appeal, Mark argued that the appellate court exceeded its jurisdiction, insisting that the dispute was an internal party matter beyond judicial intervention.
The suit was filed by aggrieved party members led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, who are contesting the legitimacy of the Mark-led leadership.
Other respondents include the ADC, its National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, INEC, and a former national chairman, Ralph Nwosu.
Mark is seeking an order restraining INEC from recognising any leadership outside his faction pending the determination of the appeal.
However, the respondents have urged the apex court to dismiss the appeal, maintaining that the lower court acted within its jurisdiction.
The judgment is expected to have significant implications for the party’s structure and participation in the 2027 elections.
