Super Falcons friendlies cancelled after Cape Verde withdrawal, leaving preparations in disarray.
Nigeria’s women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have been thrown into uncertainty after Cape Verde pulled out of scheduled international friendlies.
CBI News reports that the matches, originally set for April 15 and April 18 at the Remo Stars Stadium, were cancelled at short notice, leaving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) scrambling to find a replacement opponent.
With limited time before the international window closes, securing another team now appears unlikely.
The Falcons are expected to assemble in Abuja this weekend as part of preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 26 to August 16.
Their last outing was against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon during the previous international break.
The disruption comes amid criticism from team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who questioned the federation’s planning and communication.
She revealed that players had not received official updates regarding camp dates or confirmed fixtures for the April window.
“We are not just preparing for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations; we are also fighting for World Cup qualification,” Ajibade wrote on Instagram.
“Our performance at WAFCON will determine whether we qualify for the World Cup. So why are we not preparing with the seriousness and intensity this demands? This is not something to take lightly, for God’s sake.
“I no fit cry. Abeg weti be all this one for how long (sic).”
Her remarks highlight the importance of the tournament, which also serves as a qualification pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The situation drew further reaction after the federation confirmed that the Super Eagles will participate in the Unity Cup alongside Jamaica, Zimbabwe and India from May 26 to May 30 at The Valley Stadium.
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie appeared to respond by sharing a photo of Super Eagles players with the caption: “So Eagles get another AFCON for July?”
