Super Eagles miss 2026 World Cup play-off as FIFA confirms DR Congo spot...
Nigeria’s hopes of appearing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dashed after FIFA confirmed the DR Congo national football team as one of the teams advancing to the intercontinental play-off tournament.
CBI News reports that the announcement effectively ends the protest filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which had sought to overturn the outcome of the African play-off final.
The world football governing body released the final list of qualified teams for the play-offs without making any alterations, signalling that Nigeria’s appeal did not succeed.
The decision confirms that the Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, will not be reinstated following their penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African play-off final held in November.
The NFF had earlier lodged a formal protest alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive encounter.
Nigerian football authorities argued that some players used in the match did not meet FIFA’s eligibility requirements.
However, FIFA did not issue any ruling overturning the match result, leaving DR Congo among the countries advancing to the next stage of qualification.
With the official list unchanged, Nigeria’s hopes of appearing at the tournament have officially ended.
