The Sultan of Sokoto is not backing anyone for 2027, and his office wants you to know it.
There’s been a lot of noise on social media claiming the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
Well, that’s simply not true.
The Sultan’s Media Team has come out to debunk the report, describing it as false, misleading, and frankly, mischievous. According to a statement signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the revered monarch, as the father to all, would never publicly or privately endorse any political candidate.
And it makes sense when you think about it. As both a traditional and religious leader, the Sultan has to stay above partisan politics. His role is to be a father figure to every Nigerian, no matter which party you support or which candidate you favour.
The statement was quite clear, the Sultan’s doors remain open to everyone. He will continue to offer fatherly advice, royal blessings, and spiritual guidance to any politician who seeks it, but that does not translate to an endorsement.
The Media Team is now urging Nigerians to disregard the viral claim and condemn what it calls a malicious and unpatriotic attempt to drag the Sultan into politics for selfish reasons.
They also stressed that the Sultan remains fully committed to what he has always stood for, peace, unity, stability, and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or faith.
And finally, they had a word for media practitioners and social media users: please, verify before you share. Don’t drag revered traditional institutions into political controversies just for clicks.
