Attack in El Rahad injures 12 as fighting intensifies in Kordofan region.
A drone strike blamed on Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed two children and injured 12 others on Wednesday in the southern city of El Rahad, a medical source told reporters.
El Rahad lies in Sudan’s Kordofan region, currently the fiercest battlefield in the war between the RSF and the regular army that erupted in April 2023.
The town, in North Kordofan state, was retaken by the army last February as part of a rapid offensive that pushed westward to break a long running siege on the state capital, El Obeid.
Since then, the RSF has sought to re encircle El Obeid, launching successive drone strikes on the main highway linking the western region of Darfur with the capital, Khartoum.
CBI News reports that he conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 11 million, creating what aid agencies describe as the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises.
The war has effectively split the country in two, with the army controlling the north, centre and east, while the RSF and its allies hold the west and parts of the south.
