Sudan Drone Strike Kills 35 at Darfur Village Court Session

What was supposed to be a peaceful community court sitting under a tree in Darfur ended in tragedy after army drones reportedly fired missiles into the gathering.
In a deeply distressing development from Sudan, at least 35 people have been killed after a drone strike hit a traditional court session in the north of Darfur.
Cbinews.tv reports that the attack happened on Sunday afternoon in Ghara al Zawiya village, an area said to be controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Local rights monitors, the Emergency Lawyers Group, who track violence against civilians, confirmed the incident. They said dozens more were left injured, though the Sudanese army is yet to comment.
One witness told newsmen that the court session was being held outdoors, under a tree, with local community leaders in attendance. The witness claimed four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders were among those killed.
A resident, quoted by the privately owned Darfur 24 website, said two drones were seen circling over the town before launching more than four missiles.
This comes as Sudan's brutal three-year civil war continues to devastate the country. The RSF currently holds most of Darfur in the west, while fighting between the two sides has already killed tens of thousands and forced millions from their homes.
The Emergency Lawyers Group has condemned the strike and called for an urgent investigation. In a statement, the group said targeting a civilian court is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and warned that drones are increasingly being used to target civilian areas and gatherings, which worsens the risks faced by the population.
The RSF itself has also faced serious accusations of war crimes, including drone attacks on civilians, over the course of the war. Its siege on el Fasher, one of Darfur's main cities, last year was said by a UN fact-finding mission to bear the hallmarks of genocide, an accusation the group has denied.
