Fed up with banditry and kidnappings? Nigeria’s biggest unions say they’ve had enough — and they’re ready to down tools if things don’t change.
According to cbinews.tv, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) aren’t messing about. They’ve put the government on notice: sort out the worsening insecurity or face a full-blown nationwide strike.
The warning came during a joint press chat on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Their message? If terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings keep spiralling, workers across the country will stage a comprehensive strike.
And they’re not buying the talk from some state governors either. A few governors have claimed negotiations are ongoing with workers over a proposed N100,000 minimum wage. The unions dismissed that outright, saying it doesn’t reflect what’s actually happening with workers’ welfare discussions right now.
Insecurity has spiked lately — with the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State being the most recent case.
