Sterling joins Feyenoord on short-term deal...
Former Chelsea and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has joined Dutch side Feyenoord on a deal until the end of the season, the Eredivisie club said.
The 31-year-old England international became a free agent in January after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent, agreeing a settlement package on the final 18 months of his contract, reportedly worth more than £300,000 per week.
Sterling said he had taken time to consider his next move before opting for a switch to the Netherlands, where Feyenoord sit second in the league under coach Robin van Persie.
“As a free agent, I’ve had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career,” Sterling said.
“I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their head coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter.
“Having spoken in great detail with Robin, I’m confident that Feyenoord is a place I can be happy and establish myself as a valued member of the team. Playing abroad is a whole new challenge for me — and one I’m ready to embrace.”
Van Persie welcomed the signing, describing it as a significant coup for the club.
“Naturally it’s a fantastic feat that we’ve managed to convince a player of Raheem’s calibre to sign with us,” he said.
“His football resume speaks for itself: he’s a player whose qualities can change the outcome of a game without a doubt, and I am convinced he will turn out to be a valuable addition to the team as we work towards achieving our goals in the second half of this season.”
About 18 clubs in England and across Europe were said to have expressed interest in Sterling, but the opportunity to compete in the Eredivisie and help Feyenoord in their push for Champions League qualification influenced his decision.
Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City in July 2022 and was expected to spearhead a new era at Stamford Bridge. He featured in 59 of a possible 76 Premier League matches across his first two seasons under four different managers during a turbulent period for the club under BlueCo ownership.
After Enzo Maresca was appointed manager in June 2024, Sterling was loaned to Arsenal, having been deemed surplus to requirements. An underwhelming spell at the north London club followed, and he was later made available for transfer.
His move to Feyenoord brings to an end a challenging final two years with Chelsea.
