Security operatives in Edo State have launched a fresh crackdown on cultism after the killing of a young man near the University of Benin, leading to the arrest of 12 suspected cult members and the closure of two alleged initiation camps in Benin City.
Operatives of the Special Security Squad, popularly known as “Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers,” have arrested twelve suspected cultists and sealed off two apartments allegedly being used as initiation camps in Benin City, cbinews.tv reports.
The latest operation comes amid growing concerns over cult-related violence in Edo State, especially following the recent killing of a young man close to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) main gate — an incident that caused panic among residents and students in the area.
According to authorities, the security raids were part of a renewed offensive against cultism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes threatening public safety across the state. Officials say the operation was carefully coordinated to target suspected criminal hideouts and disrupt cult networks believed to be operating within Benin City.
The two apartments reportedly shut down during the raids were allegedly being used for cult initiation activities and gatherings.Speaking on the development, the spokesperson for the squad, Noah Idemudia, said the operation reflects the Edo State Government’s stronger commitment to tackling insecurity and restoring confidence among residents.
He explained that security agencies are intensifying efforts to identify criminal groups, dismantle their operations, and prevent further violence in the state.
The recent killing near the UNIBEN axis had triggered widespread concern among residents, many of whom have been calling for tighter security measures and increased surveillance around student-populated areas.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and warned that anyone found involved in cult-related activities or violent crimes would face the full weight of the law. The state government has also continued to urge residents to support security agencies with credible information that could help in tracking down criminal elements and improving safety across Edo communities.
