Move over, Avengers – your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man has only just swung in, and he’s already nearly toppled your crown.
Well, it’s official – Spider-Man has only gone and done it again.
In what can only be described as an absolutely bonkers opening weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung straight into the record books. According to studio estimates reported by cbinews.tv, the Sony superhero blockbuster raked in a staggering $355 million in North America alone, making it the second-biggest domestic debut of all time.
It was this close to taking the top spot, falling just a few million short of Avengers: Endgame and its $357 million launch back in 2019.
And if you thought that was impressive, wait for the worldwide figures. The film pulled in another $572 million from over 73,500 screens internationally – with China chipping in a massive $121 million on its own. That brings its total worldwide debut to $927 million. Again, second only to Endgame ($1.2 billion). Not bad for a lad from Queens, eh?
It’s no surprise, really. Tom Holland’s run as the webslinger has been nothing short of mighty. His last outing, No Way Home, swung past $1.9 billion globally to become the eighth highest-grossing film ever (without adjusting for inflation) and was the first film since the pandemic to smash past the $1 billion mark.
What makes this win even sweeter is the timing. Brand New Day landed just as another Holland and Zendaya powerhouse – Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey – was still dominating. The Odyssey slipped to second place in its third weekend with a very healthy $51 million, down just 43%.
Together, the pair helped deliver the biggest weekend ever for North American cinemas, with an estimated $430 million in total ticket sales, according to Rentrak.
The Odyssey itself is now sitting on $395.5 million domestically and $911.4 million globally, with big openings in South Korea (5 Aug), China (14 Aug) and Japan (11 Sept) still to come.
Rounding out the top five were the family favourites – Toy Story 5 in third with $6.3 million, followed by *Minions & Monsters* and *Moana* in fourth and fifth.
And there’s a lovely bit of theatre news further down the chart. In sixth place, Hadestown: The Musical made $2 million and has now overtaken Hamilton to become the highest-grossing live theatre capture release ever, with $18.2 million and counting.
As Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, told cbinews.tv, the Spider-Man effect could push the summer season past the $4 billion mark for the first time since the Barbenheimer summer of 2023 – and deliver only the third-ever billion-dollar August.
Spidey senses are tingling all the way to the bank.
