Sowore Trial: AGF Appears for DSS in Abuja Court

Nigeria's number one law officer stepped into the courtroom himself on Tuesday as the high profile trial of Omoyele Sowore took a dramatic turn in Abuja.
It was a big moment at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, appeared in person for the prosecution in the ongoing trial of Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters.
Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services, DSS, for alleged criminal defamation before Justice Mohammed Umar.
The DSS accused Sowore of making false claims against President Bola Tinubu after he referred to the President as "a criminal" in posts he made on his X and Facebook accounts.
On the strength of that, the security agency slammed him with charges bordering on criminal defamation, cyberstalking and incitement.
On Tuesday, Fagbemi led a heavyweight legal team that included the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, and Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, among others.
In court, the AGF urged the judge to reject a subpoenaed letter seeking to compel the DG of the DSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, to appear and testify for Sowore’s defence.
According to Fagbemi, the DSS had already been cooperative enough by allowing its official, the 2nd defence witness, DW2, to testify on the last adjourned date. He argued that the fresh application to drag the DG into the witness box was simply a ploy to delay proceedings.
