Things got heated in Abuja on Saturday as activist Omoyele Sowore led hundreds through the capital, accusing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of “hijacking” public lands and demanding Jabi Lake be saved from alleged land grabs.
Omoyele Sowore was back on the streets on Saturday, and he didn’t come quietly. The former presidential candidate and activist led hundreds of protesters across Abuja in a fiery demonstration against what they’re calling large-scale land grabbing by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, cbinews.tv reports.
The crowd turned out in big numbers, marching through key parts of the capital with one message: hands off our land. Protesters accused the FCT administration of seizing legitimately acquired plots in Abuja and handing them over to political associates and cronies. Placards were up, chants were loud, and the focus was sharp — protect public spaces.
Jabi Lake and Jabi Park were front and centre, with demonstrators insisting both areas must not be encroached upon or privatised.Banners read: “Save Jabi Lake Now”, “Save Jabi Park Now”, and “Stop Land Grabbing in Abuja”. As the protest picked up steam, the chants got more direct. “Wike is a land thief” echoed through the streets, with some also calling out “Tinubu is a land thief”, pointing fingers at the wider administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under which the FCT ministry operates.
The protesters are demanding an immediate stop to what they described as a “systematic takeover of public lands”. They’re also calling for proper transparency in how land gets allocated in the capital. At the time of filing this report, the mass protest was still ongoing.
