Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has thrown his weight behind Aisha Yesufu’s 2027 senatorial ambition in the FCT, while openly criticising her decision to join a different political party instead of his own platform.
Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared support for fellow activist Aisha Yesufu’s bid for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, while expressing disappointment over her choice of political party.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television monitored by CBI News on Monday, Sowore said activists must actively participate in politics if they truly want to change society.
“No, I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” he said.
According to Sowore, political participation remains one of the most important forms of activism.
“The business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society,” he added.
While backing Yesufu’s ambition, Sowore maintained that she aligned with the wrong political party and should have joined his own movement instead.
“So I totally support her, and I hope she wins. Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party, she should have joined our party,” he stated.
CBI News reports that Aisha Yesufu recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she officially declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat in 2027.
Explaining her decision, Yesufu said her move was driven by a deeper political conviction and her support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she said.
She further clarified that she was not merely joining the party as an ordinary member but entering active politics as a candidate.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” Yesufu added.
The activist also noted that she completed all her responsibilities within the ADC before making her exit official.
