Just days before their World Cup campaign begins, South Africa’s preparations have hit an unexpected snag as visa delays force Bafana Bafana to postpone their departure for a crucial training camp in Mexico.
South Africa’s World Cup preparations have suffered a setback after visa complications delayed the team’s departure for Mexico, according to cbinewstv.
Bafana Bafana were due to leave Johannesburg on Sunday for a pre-tournament training camp in Mexico ahead of the FIFA World Cup. However, travel plans were put on hold after several players and officials were unable to secure their visas in time.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed the development in a statement, revealing that difficulties in obtaining travel documents for parts of the delegation had disrupted the team's schedule.
SAFA said efforts were ongoing to resolve the issue quickly and ensure the squad travel to Mexico City as soon as possible.
“We are working around the clock to make sure the team travels to Mexico City at the earliest opportunity,” the association said.
The football body also announced that an emergency meeting would be held on Sunday to address the situation and find a solution.
Local media reports suggest that visas for at least 20 members of the delegation are still being processed at the United States Embassy in Johannesburg.
Reacting to the delay, South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, described the situation as both embarrassing and unfair to the players and coaching staff. In a post on X, he said he had demanded answers and insisted that those responsible should be held accountable.
South Africa, popularly known as Bafana Bafana, has been drawn in Group A alongside Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea.
The tournament marks South Africa’s first World Cup appearance in 16 years, with their opening match scheduled against Mexico on 11 June.
The team recently played out a goalless draw against Nicaragua in a friendly in Soweto and are due to face Jamaica in another warm-up match on 5 June as preparations continue.
