Nine women found dumped by a roadside east of Johannesburg in just weeks. Now police say they have a breakthrough and women across South Africa are asking how many more.
As reported by cbinews.tv, three suspects, a man and two women, have been detained over the murder of Jabulile Ntimba, whose half naked body was found wrapped in a sheet in Dawn Park last Thursday. They are due in court on Monday.
Acting police chief Lt Gen Puleng Dimpane said officers were working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
This is not just a police file. Jabulile was the ninth case in that same area. Several victims were found partially clothed with injuries, leaving families traumatised and a whole community on edge.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of gender based violence in the world and a very high murder rate overall. Official stats do not always break down murder victims by gender, but a recent estimate from the Human Rights Commission said an average of six women were murdered every day between April and June this year alone.
The grim discoveries east of Johannesburg have sparked national outcry. For many women it has deepened a daily feeling of insecurity and put huge pressure on police to act fast.
Is this a serial killer? Police say they have not established that. Deputy chief Lt Gen Tebello Mosikili told reporters a team of analysts are working hard to see if there are links across all nine cases. On Jabulile's case, she said it appears to stem from a relationship and includes a possible love triangle.
Police are calling the arrests a breakthrough but the investigation continues into whether the other eight murders are connected.
South Africa has faced waves of femicide protests for years, from the murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana in 2019 to recent campus killings, yet conviction rates remain low and activists say the system is failing. The next test is what happens in court on Monday and whether these arrests lead to justice for all nine women.
