Defence ministry reports coordinated military action with international support and air strikes in Jubbaland region.
Somalia’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that its armed forces and regional security forces had killed 27 Al Shabaab militants in the semi-autonomous Jubbaland state in an operation carried out with international support.
The ministry did not name the international partners involved but said the operation was backed by air strikes.
The United States military has previously conducted air strikes in Somalia in support of efforts against Al Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency for two decades aiming to topple the Horn of Africa nation’s central government and establish its own rule based on a strict interpretation of Sharia law.
The defence ministry said the militants were killed in a large-scale operation across areas of Lower Jubba and Middle Jubba, adding that weapons and landmines were also seized.
It said those killed included key members of the insurgent group.
An African Union peacekeeping mission has also supported Somalia’s government in its fight against Al Shabaab. However, the group still controls large rural areas and continues to carry out frequent attacks on major population centres.
