Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated the eighth Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), naming Professor Peter Onwualu as the institution's new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council.
The newly constituted council brings together a blend of experienced academics, traditional leaders and public servants. Among its members are Igwe Dr Chris Oranu Chidume, Prof O. J. Ogbuagu, Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, and retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Chris Ezike.
Also serving on the council are key university officials, including Vice-Chancellor Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha, alongside several deputy vice-chancellors and distinguished academics such as Prof A. C. Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Awka, Governor Soludo described the appointment as a significant responsibility, stressing that the university is currently at a crucial stage in its growth and development.
According to the governor, members of the council must demonstrate integrity, accountability and unwavering commitment in carrying out their duties. He urged them to focus on decisions and reforms that would strengthen the institution and secure its future.
"You have a lot of heavy lifting to do. I am confident that with the new leadership of the council, you will provide nothing short of excellence," Soludo said.
The governor also challenged the council to tackle long-standing institutional issues, particularly concerns surrounding recent academic recruitment exercises, which he said require thorough review and scrutiny.
Expressing confidence in the new leadership team, Soludo noted that Prof Onwualu's wealth of experience would be instrumental in addressing the university's challenges and driving improved performance.
Responding on behalf of the council, Prof Onwualu pledged to work tirelessly towards transforming COOU into one of Nigeria's top three state-owned universities.
He also appealed for sustained support from the Anambra State Government, emphasising that strong collaboration would be essential to achieving the university's development goals and long-term vision.
