Lagosians divided over social media impact on lives
Lagos residents are expressing mixed views on the impact of social media on communication, business and daily life, with some praising its benefits and others raising concerns over its influence, particularly among young people.
Esther Ventus, a marketer, said social media has both advantages and disadvantages but that the benefits outweigh the downsides. She said it has enhanced her work, particularly in connecting with clients and customers, adding that it remains useful when properly utilised.
Akinleye Iseoluwa, an architect, said social media has had a positive impact on his profession. He noted that platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook provide opportunities to learn and relax outside work.
Olaposi Favour, an insurance broker, said social media has been helpful, adding that traditional television viewing is gradually declining. He said platforms such as X, LinkedIn and Instagram have created income opportunities through content creation.
Mary Nwawodoh, an HMO consultant, described social media as essential in today’s world, saying those not using it risk falling behind. She acknowledged, however, that it has both positive and negative aspects.
Augustine Grace, a data analyst and content creator, said social media has significantly improved her daily life and work.
Timilehin Adeyinka, a litigant, said while social media has both positive and negative impacts, the latter outweigh the former. He said many young people focus on harmful aspects and called for greater regulation.
Faith Izoruru, a baker, said social media is useful, noting that it helps students, workers and artisans improve their skills and knowledge.
Despite differing opinions, social media continues to play a central role in modern life, with many saying its overall impact depends on how individuals choose to use it.
