A suspected ISWAP bomb-making operation ended in disaster after an improvised explosive device reportedly detonated prematurely, killing six militants in Borno State.
cbinews.tv learnt that six suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were reportedly killed following an accidental explosion involving an improvised explosive device (IED) in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security analyst and counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the incident in a post shared on X on Saturday, citing intelligence and security sources.
The explosion reportedly occurred around 7:00 a.m. on May 16, 2026, in Jubilaram, where the suspected insurgents were allegedly assembling explosive materials for planned operations.
Sources said the group was led by a suspected bomb-making specialist identified as Abu Umar, who was among those killed in the blast alongside five other militants.
Three additional members of the group were also said to have sustained severe injuries during the explosion.
According to intelligence assessments, the deceased suspects were believed to be members of an ISWAP IED-production unit operating within the Marte–Kerenoa–Wulgo corridor, a strategic area frequently used for insurgent movement and operations around the Lake Chad Basin.
Security sources indicated that the explosion happened while the device was being prepared, triggering a premature detonation that destroyed the suspected bomb-making site and caused multiple casualties among the operatives.
The report added that the death of Abu Umar and other IED specialists could significantly weaken ISWAP’s ability to deploy explosive devices within the region.
The blast was also said to have affected a suspected IED fabrication hub located between Arinna Maimasallaci and Arinna Ciki, temporarily disrupting activities at the location.
Military intelligence sources further suggested that the incident could reduce ISWAP’s operational capabilities along strategic routes in the Marte axis.
Authorities are reportedly considering follow-up air and ground offensives to exploit the situation and further limit insurgent movements and activities in the area.
