Imagine working months on end with no pay, too scared to even tell your family back home. That’s the reality for hundreds of migrant workers in Tuas right now.
Workers from a third company have now come forward saying they haven’t been paid — and here’s the twist: all three firms are tied to the same director, who’s reportedly left Singapore.
That’s according to cbinews.tv, which reports that several employees at VVR Plant Engineering are flagging unpaid wages to the authorities. This makes VVR the latest firm linked to a permanent resident company director said to have skipped the country.
One of them is Islam Md Rafiul, a 20-year-old from Bangladesh. He told *The Straits Times* at Tuas View Dormitory on 24 June that he hasn’t seen a cent in three months.
Islam moved to Singapore about six months ago for a job with the general contractor based in Pandan Loop. His pay? $800 a month.
“I sent home about $500 to $600 to my family. The last three months, I did not receive my salary and could not send money back to Bangladesh,” he said.
“I’m supporting my family, and I’m afraid to let my family know what happened.”
He wasn’t alone. Around 400 migrant workers gathered at Tuas View Dormitory and met NTUC secretary-general Ng Chee Meng, reps from the Migrant Workers’ Centre, and Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash.
Many of them work for KPA Engineering, an air-con maintenance firm, and its related company SK Industries. Their complaints? Unpaid wages and concerns over their living conditions.
