From kidnapping hotspot to fully-lit superhighway, Rivers State just got a major glow-up, and it’s set to change everything for three local councils.
Big moves in Rivers today! Vice President Kashim Shettima jetted into Port Harcourt to stand in for President Bola Tinubu, and together with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, they officially cut the ribbon on the brand new 33.5km Elele–Egbeda–Omoku Dual Carriageway.
Shettima was received at the Port Harcourt International Airport by Governor Fubara and top government officials, a development confirmed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.
This isn’t just any road, you know. The road stretches across Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs, and it comes with a proper river-crossing bridge and streetlights from start to finish.
Speaking at the commissioning, Shettima put it beautifully:
“Roads are the most democratic instruments of development... When a road works, society moves.”
He reminded everyone how bad it used to be — deep gullies, a totally deteriorated carriageway, and serious security worries. Now? A modern, illuminated dual carriageway for safer travel day and night.
He also hailed the project as proof that governance is a continuum and commended Governor Fubara for committing public resources to get it over the line, saying public infrastructure must be judged by the lives it improves.
Governor Fubara didn’t hold back either. He said the project is more than asphalt and concrete; it’s a statement that his administration cares.
“It’s a statement that we have made to show our people... that we care for you and your concerns are our concern,” he said.
And he got real about the past, describing the old road as a notorious corridor for kidnapping and bunkering. But with full illumination and better access for security agencies, he’s confident those dark days are over.
“In this project, we have lights from the beginning to the end. So even in the night, it is properly illuminated,” Fubara added, thanking the Federal Government for its support.
Promise made, promise kept, indeed.
