Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed reports linking him to support for banditry, describing the circulating materials online as fake and manipulated.
Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has denied allegations linking him to support for banditry in Nigeria, insisting that several statements and video clips circulating online have been manipulated and taken out of context.
In a statement issued in Kaduna, Gumi described the reports as false, doctored and designed to push ethnic and sectional interests.
According to him, some of his past media interviews, lectures and comments on insecurity have been deliberately twisted by online content creators looking for sensational headlines and social media attention.
Gumi stated clearly that he has never supported, justified or encouraged banditry in any part of Nigeria.
“I hereby state unequivocally that any video clip, written statement or message attributed to me suggesting support for banditry does not emanate from me,” he said.
The cleric also reaffirmed his loyalty to Nigeria, describing the country as a nation with enormous potential despite its security challenges.
He urged the public, media organisations and government agencies to ignore any misleading content being shared in his name.
Gumi further warned that anyone continuing to spread false claims against him after the release of the statement could face legal action.
He also expressed hope that Nigeria would overcome insecurity, while calling for long-term solutions to issues such as poverty, ignorance and social injustice, which he believes contribute to violence across the country.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the statement comes amid ongoing national conversations surrounding insecurity and the spread of misinformation online.
