Sheikh Gumi supports creation of Nigerian Forest Security Service but warns against aerial bombings after Tudun Biri airstrike tragedy.
Islamic scholar Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has endorsed the proposed Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) as a strategic step toward flushing out bandits from forest hideouts across the country.
Speaking during his Ramadan Tafsir in Kaduna, Gumi urged the new outfit to adopt firm and coordinated measures in tackling criminal groups. However, he cautioned against the use of aerial bombardments in forest operations, warning that such tactics could lead to civilian casualties.
He referenced the tragic airstrike in Tudun Biri, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where over 100 residents were reportedly killed in a mistaken strike by the Nigerian Air Force.
According to the cleric, while decisive action is necessary to curb banditry, bombing operations in or around forest communities pose grave risks to innocent lives.
Gumi also expressed concern over the growing sophistication and brutality of bandit groups, alleging external influences may be contributing to their escalation. He warned that such groups could evolve into full-scale terrorist organisations if not effectively addressed.
CBI News reports that he called on authorities to adopt security strategies capable of dismantling criminal enclaves while safeguarding civilian populations.
