Prosecutors seek maximum penalty over AFCON final disturbances.
Moroccan prosecutors on Thursday requested jail terms of up to two years for 18 Senegalese football fans detained in Rabat since last month’s AFCON final over alleged hooliganism.
The prosecution said the group deliberately disrupted the match, committing acts of violence broadcast live on television, though the fans deny any wrongdoing.
CBI News reports that the supporters have been in pre-trial detention since January 18, the day Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the heated final.
Some fans attempted a pitch invasion, threw objects onto the field, and caused stadium damage estimated at more than 4 million Moroccan dirhams, or $430,000.
Evidence cited includes stadium surveillance footage and medical reports documenting injuries to security personnel and stewards.
Their lawyer, Naima El Guellaf, argued the footage does not irrefutably show the defendants committing assaults and that CAF sanctions on the Senegalese federation should prevent double punishment.
The prosecution countered that CAF’s penalties do not exempt the accused from criminal responsibility and reinforce their alleged guilt.
A verdict was expected by the end of Thursday.
Morocco is scheduled to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
