2027: Senate to adjourn sessions as lawmakers head for party primaries.
The Nigerian Senate will suspend its plenary sessions later this week to enable lawmakers participate in political party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CBI News reports that the decision was disclosed on Tuesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.
Akpabio explained that the temporary suspension became necessary as many lawmakers would be returning to their constituencies to take part in the nomination process.
He noted that attendance in the chamber would significantly drop during the period.
Despite the pause in plenary sittings, the Senate President stated that legislative activities would not come to a halt, as committees would continue with their assignments.
He added that the Senate plans to conclude pending legislative business before Thursday to allow members travel out of Abuja.
Lawmakers were also urged to use the remaining days of the week to wrap up important matters ahead of the break.
Akpabio further appealed to political parties to structure their primary election schedules in a way that allows lawmakers to effectively balance legislative duties with party activities.
According to him, overlapping schedules could affect representation, as lawmakers may be absent from plenary.
