Nigeria Senate reconstitute committee on electoral act...
The Senate has reconstituted a 12-member Electoral Act Conference Committee to harmonise differences in the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act, appointing Simon Bako Lalong as chairman.
CBI News reports that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the composition of the committee on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session.
The conference committee is expected to interface with its counterpart in the House of Representatives to reconcile discrepancies between the versions of the amendment bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
The harmonisation process is aimed at resolving contentious clauses and producing a unified document for final legislative approval.
Among members of the Senate committee are Orji Uzor Kalu and Tahir Mungono, alongside other lawmakers appointed to steer the reconciliation process.
The development forms part of broader legislative efforts to refine Nigeria’s electoral legal framework ahead of future elections, particularly the 2027 general polls.
Lawmakers expressed confidence that the harmonisation exercise would address grey areas in the bill and enhance transparency, credibility and operational efficiency in the conduct of elections across the country.
They maintained that the process would ensure that contentious provisions are properly clarified before the final version is transmitted for presidential assent.
