Millions from FIFA and CAF, full backing from the Federal Government, but the results aren't adding up - and now the Senate is asking questions.
Drama is brewing off the pitch.
The Nigerian Senate has voiced serious concern over the state of the country's football, following what it described as a disappointing outing for the Super Falcons at the just-concluded Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, and the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
According to cbinews.tv, the concerns were raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, after a closed-door meeting with the top brass of Nigerian sports - including National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko, NSC Director-General Olawale Olopade, and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau.
Senator Ningi, who said he followed the Falcons' campaign closely in Morocco, didn't mince words. He described the performance as disappointing, especially considering the team had received plenty of motivation and support from the Federal Government ahead of the tournament.
The meeting was meant to get answers on the state of Nigerian football and sports development generally.
But things took an interesting turn after the meeting. Journalists who had been waiting to ask about football development and funding were left hanging. The NFF President, the NSC Chairman and the NSC DG reportedly left the venue shortly after the session, without addressing questions about funding.
And those questions are big. We're talking millions of dollars reportedly received from FIFA and CAF to support football development, infrastructure, competitions and related programmes.
Where did the money go? That’s the question everyone is asking.
