Senate shifts stand on mode of transmission of election results after public outcry....
Nigeria’s Senate on Tuesday adopted both electronic and manual modes for transmitting election results, following weeks of public outrage and protests over attempts to restrict electronic transmission in amendments to the Electoral Act.
The decision was taken during plenary after lawmakers considered recommendations aimed at addressing concerns raised by the public over the credibility of the electoral process.
The Senate modified Clause 60 to require the presiding officer at each polling unit to electronically transmit results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing (IREV) portal.
Under the revised provision, if electronic transmission fails due to communication or network problems, the manual result sheet, known as Form EC8A, will serve as the primary source for result collation.
The move follows sustained demonstrations at the National Assembly, where protesters have argued that electronic transmission of results is crucial to curbing electoral fraud and restoring public confidence in elections.
