Over 120 million Americans were expected to watch the biggest event in US sports, the game took place at the 75,000-capacity Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California...
The Seattle Seahawks produced a dominant defensive performance to beat the New England Patriots 29-13 on Sunday and claim their second Super Bowl title.
Two of the NFL’s strongest defences went head-to-head in the season finale at Levi’s Stadium, but Seattle asserted control from the outset and never relented.
The victory was built on a defensive display for the ages, with Briton Aden Durde playing a pivotal role to become the first overseas coach to win the Super Bowl. The Seahawks’ 46-year-old defensive coordinator has overseen the unit nicknamed “the Dark Side”, widely regarded as the league’s most feared defence.
Seattle’s defence stifled New England quarterback Drake Maye, who narrowly missed out on the regular-season Most Valuable Player award. The Seahawks registered six sacks, forced three turnovers and scored a defensive touchdown.
After taking a 9-0 lead into halftime, Seattle struck early in the fourth quarter when Maye’s first turnover set up the game’s opening touchdown, caught by tight end AJ Barner. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu later returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, while Jason Meyers kicked a Super Bowl-record five field goals.
Maye briefly revived Patriots' hopes with a touchdown pass to Mack Hollins to cut the deficit to 19-7, but interceptions on New England’s next two possessions halted any momentum. Rhamondre Stevenson’s late touchdown proved only a consolation.
“We were the better team; we’re the best team,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told NBC. “We believed in each other and now we’re champions.”
New England were appearing in their first Super Bowl since 2019, following the departures of quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, who together led the franchise to six titles.
Head coach Mike Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker, had hoped to become the first man to win a Super Bowl with the same franchise as both a player and a head coach. Quarterback Maye was aiming to become the youngest to lift the Lombardi Trophy.
Instead, Seattle’s defence shut down the Patriots’ running game and limited star receiver Stefon Diggs, as the Seahawks denied New England a record seventh Super Bowl triumph.
