Big moves in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the Social Democratic Party reshuffles its leadership and sets its sights firmly on the 2027 elections.
In a lively and closely watched convention held at the Bola Tinubu Conference Centre, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially picked Abimbola Akeem Atanda as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, according to reports from cbinews.tv.
The decision came during the party’s 2026 National Convention and Presidential Primary on Wednesday, where delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory gave their backing through a voice vote.
Party chairman Shehu Gabam led the proceedings that ultimately confirmed Atanda as the SDP’s flagbearer for the upcoming polls.
But it wasn’t just about nominations. The convention also saw a significant shake-up within the party’s structure, as the SDP announced the suspension of several key members of its National Working Committee (NWC). Among those affected are the National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, and the National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, alongside other senior figures including Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe and Adewole Adebayo.
Others listed in the suspension include Joseph Achile Abu, Maggie Mariam Batubo, Sa’adatu Abdullahi, Abimbola Aderemi, Oguchukwu Uba, Huseesini Bello, Alabi Lekan, Rosemary Effiong, and Abubakar Modibo.
Party officials stated that the disciplinary action followed findings that the affected individuals allegedly acted in ways considered inconsistent with the party’s constitution and guiding principles, warning that such behaviour had undermined unity and internal discipline.
A formal motion was also moved asking delegates to approve and ratify both the suspensions and expulsions.
In addition, the convention confirmed the ratification of Shehu Gabam as the party’s National Chairman, alongside the newly constituted National Working Committee.
