If your street has started looking like a mini-dumpsite this week, you're not alone – and the governor says he's had enough.
Right, here's what's happening, in plain English. According to cbinewstv, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered a full-scale, immediate evacuation of waste across Lagos after complaints of rubbish building up in several communities.
He dropped the update on X, and it was classic Sanwo-Olu, direct and no frills: “Dear Lagosians, I have directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation across Lagos following the recent build-up of refuse in some parts of our state.”
The cavalry has been called in. LAWMA, LASEPA and the Ministry of Environment are now working round-the-clock, with extra trucks and more personnel sent out to clear the backlog. The governor insists you should already be seeing the difference: “You should already see progress on the streets, and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again.”
And it's a big job. Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, with LAWMA's own figures from May putting it at an average of 13,200 tonnes a day. That's why Sanwo-Olu keeps stressing partnership, not just government trucks.
His plea to residents was simple: bag it properly, and stop tossing rubbish in drains or on the road. “As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” he added.
So yes, the clean-up is officially in overdrive. If you're in Yaba, Egbeda, Ajah or anywhere that’s been smelling a bit ripe lately, keep an eye out for the extra LAWMA teams. And maybe hold that black nylon bag until the truck actually comes.
